Leave the kids alone.

This sounds MORE and MORE like a circus. He is being shuttled in NOW? What shameless USERS these people are! Talk about making lemonade. He is being SET UP to be the FULCRUM between the conservatives chanting Family Embracement and anybody else even mentioning to ASK WHY IN THE WORLD HE IS WALKING HEADFIRST INTO THIS GLARING SPOTLIGHT? Is it that NECESSARY to ROPE him in?
Well, perhaps politicaly, YES.
Personally, I am appalled. Not that he is the father supporting the girl but that he is being USED for the political advancement of others.

Right. They can parade them around, but they want their privacy.
Um, WHICH IS IT???

lets put them in the spotlight so every teen thinks its all ok. Americas accepted this so lets all have babies maybe they should have talked about condoms instead of marriage
- 15 votes
No one would care about the misdeeds of this teenager if the republicans weren't so busy trying to tell other people how to live their lives with their holier then thou rhetoric and their push for abstinence-only taught in place of comprehensive all encompassing sex education in school that includes birth control.

Leave the kids alone?
it was trumpeted for all to hear that her (palin's) son is going to iraq.
if we are to leave the kids alone, they should not have tried to take advantage of her sons service for political gain
You cant have it both ways.
this though as most have already stated, is not about the daughter, but more about mccains judgement

Let's take one step back and remember something about all the other politicians and their past sexual encounter. They all made headlines and were blasted with mean comments. Why should or would this be any different. All of you know that famous line from "GONE WITH THE WIND" Well I don't give a dam but if you do then go ahead and make your blast. If you are like me then let it go along with all the other garbage on past politicians. Vote for who is best for the country.

libratine: The poor guy (kid) was dragged into this because of the media and others that simply can't resisit commenting (judging) their situation. PLEASE can we drop this thread. Try to remember when you were young - can you imagine what this spotlight might have done to your life. Granted, the VP pick brought the familly into the national spotlight.... it doesn't mean we all have to have some sort of opinion on personal family matters. Nothing illegal, nothing really out of the ordinary for any American extended family.

How awful!!!! Now AMERICA has on display TEEN PREGNANCY... It's ok, the Vice President said so. The young boy is 18 and daughter is 17. Do this make him a Child Pedophile?
God Have Mercy on OUR country.

I agree. The daughter is not running for office, and if elected, it will not be the daughter who will take the helm should something happen to McCain. I grow easily annoyed with the self-righteous jerks who would criticize this family over this; How many of us could withstand the public scrutiny that these people are under and come out without something being revealed we'd rather not have known? The Mom is the one running. Focus on her and leave her and every one else's family alone.

I can't believe the press doesn't have anything more important to talk about.

The Palins appeal for privacy for their pregnant, unwed teenage daughter, yet they go in-your-face with it by bringing the baby's teenage father to the GOP Convention. These people have absolutely no shame--or class.

Having just read the several hundred posts on this, I believe anyyone could find nearly everything that is wrong with politics in America today. It used to be, and not that long ago, that politicians could strenuously disagree, without being disagreeable. Two stong Senators, the ultra conservative Orrin Hatch of Utah and the ultra liberal "Uncle Teddy" (quoting Caroline) Kennedy disagree on nearly every political issue, and they are close, personal, warm friends. The access to 24 hour cable news and blogs by fools have created so much animosity. This is not healthy for America or Americans.
These are just two kids. Just like many of your kids. Or your parents. Or their parents. None of us...NONE OF US come from a family that has not faced a situation similar to what these kids are facing. NONE OF US have had to do it as a national political issue. I thank God for that. You may thank whoever or whatever you want in your family, just be happy that it is so.
Let's all take a deep breath and understand we have two good men who are seeking to lead the free world and make improtant decisions that will ripple through generations, and that we ought to make choices based upon which of these two good men, both of whom want to do their very best for America, would have the best chance to accomplish that goal. This hate mongering is beneath what this election is about.
- 4 votes
If they want this to be a "private affair", then why are they parading these children in public?? I can't believe the boy's parents are allowing this. This entire situation has turned sick.
And for the record: It was not the Press or the Democrats that announced this girl's pregnancy, it was the McCain camp. Palin through her daughter under the bus to protect herself.

Rbos: The thread directly relates to the article. And, if you read my post again, I think you'll find that we agree more than disagree, except for your first sentence:
The poor guy (kid) was dragged into this because of the media and others that simply can't resist commenting (judging) their situation.
I respectfully disagree:. If the two were eating ice cream cones on a park bench back in Alaska, YES, the media would be dragging them in. However the RNC is a MEDIA EVENT, not a private club party. In fact, this year I think it is a circus!
The ISSUE raised is the following, "Are these two are NOW being USED to advance the political gain of the party?"
A few days ago, Bristol's pregnancy was being COVERED UP by baby Trig and a blanket. Yesterday it was a call for their PRIVACY after the campaign elected to reveal Bristol's her condition as a means to DISPEL inconclusive blogoshpere rumors involving her mother. And now these two are to be paraded onstage (so to speak) reminiscent in my mind to Homecoming King and Queen in the stadium. I even fear a standing ovation coming this way.
So when the camera lens focus on the family members attending Sarah Palen's speech, will THAT be the media's fault? Or were Bristol & Levi INTENTIONALLY put in the spotlight and for WHAT purpose and by WHOM?

The self righteous mindnumbing religious fringe is trying to put a good spin on this whole trashy scenario. This is screwed up on so many levels.
This might play well on Jerry Springer or Maury Povich's shows but not in the second highest seat in our government.
Now the plan is to parade the 18 year old boyfriend/father, Levi Johnston before the world.
This is wrong. It makes us look like fools around the world. The selfserving Republicans are doing what they always do. Look you right in the face and say the earth is flat.
We are trying to elevate our country at home and around the world and the Republicans are allowing their lowest common denominator to set the tone and agenda.
I am sick to death of the whole ignorant backward group of them.

I really wish some GOP politician were able to stand up and say how they REALLY FEEL about the entire blooming travesty. Like could they possibly get a do-over because I have to say the Republicans got gypped with McCain! The new video posted today of Sarah speaking to her church about God and war doesn't help. What else is there to cover/uncover back there in exceedingly remote and mainstream removed small town Alaska? I think it is reasonable to consider the possibility that she may have back-out for family related reasons.
- 4 votes
So why don't they get married already, or are they holding out for a White House wedding.

Wolf Blitzer just reported that the campaign has canceled a scheduled interview with Larry King due to an unfriendly segment last night on CNN -- the one where Campbell Brown grilled McCain spokesperson Tucker bounds over Sarah Palin's lack of foreign policy experience. WOW!!!!
And the GOP microcosm gets smaller and smaller.
TIME TO TAKE OFF THE KIDD GLOVES MSNBC and shrink em down to size!!!
Pretty soon they can only talk to Fox!

HISTORY LESSON
You see that child from Bangladesh sitting next to Cindy McCain tonight? In 2000, George Bush and some of the same puppets and cronies crying now about Palin's treatment, used that child's race to knock McCain out of the primary in South Carolina and ultimately end his bid for president that year.
So thanks for the humor when you come out with the 'leave the kids alone' complaining. Ask Cindy McCain about her experience with the Republicans leaving the kids alone.
Ultimately I care less about whether Palin's daughter is now pregnant than if her daughter is TRIG'S MOTHER AND THERE HAS BEEN AND IS A HUGE COVER-UP GOING ON...It's not the pregnancy, but the cover-up that would be a HUGE ISSUE. I don't ascribe to tabloid journalism, but what I've seen makes a pretty good case regarding Trig's parentage...these analyses are not 'ugly' and 'mean' etc... and the issue is not the actual pregnancy...it's the COVER-UP...if there was/is a cover-up regarding Trig to advance Palin's career and right-wing agenda, and the mainstream media ignores it, they are doing a tremendous disservice to the American people.
We've watched lies and cover-ups the last eight years. Each time the mainstream media was COWED by the right...whether it was because they were painted as un-American to ask questions about the reasons for going to war, etc. The mainstream media better not let this one slide. IT IS AN ISSUE...and you're all cowards if you don't investigate it fully and get to the bottom of it. If what those 'liberal', 'radical', 'tabloid', 'ugly', 'mean', 'un-American' bloggers are writing is TRUE then it needs to be reported. End of story.

Well said netprophet! COVER-UP and political MISCONDUCT. And peek at my post that landed above yours.

Our economy is a mess, we have thousands of young men and women deployed in Iraq, an over-dependence on foreign oil and rising gas and grocery prices that are sending everyday working men and women to food banks. Even if Palin were the most qualified Republican candidate in the party, which she isn't, the double-whammy of coming to grips and raising an infant with a life-altering disability and, at the same time, helping a teenage daughter learn how to become a parent is monumental. How could McCain possibly believe that any person of any race or gender could deal with these huge family issues while assuming the second-in-command role in the most powerful country on the earth? It defies logic.
- 5 votes
well, you have a few posts that landed above mine, Libratine!, but the one that begins 'Rbos:' talks about whether this is all a coverup...which is what I'm wondering...I want a DEFINITIVE ANSWER AS TO WHETHER SARAH OR BRISTOL IS TRIG'S MOTHER... There is news footage out there of Sarah when she was supposed to be 7 or more months pregnant taking a brisk walk through some town in Alaska looking nothing like a woman who is 7months pregnant- unless that video was doctored somehow or the bloggers are lying about when it was taken- which may be the case, I don't know- then her lack of any sign of being pregnant with Trig is a fact that needs to be investigated. If sh'es lying about who is and is not her own child then we need to know about that. What is going on here?
If the far-left loons had left the kids alone, then this wouldn't be an issue. Even Obama condemns these attacks. Show some class.
- 2 votes
Yes, please add 'far-left loons' to my list of names used to describe people making what seem to me to be legitimate arguments backed by video, pictures, hospital records (or lack thereof)...etc.
I think you are missing the point. Its not about the kids having kids issue that I am upset about. Its that if the tables were turned, you know the Republicans would be all over the "moral" issue. This thing does happen to alot of families. I just think its funny that its happened to the people who are try to say they have higher morals than the Democrats. But now they turn it around and say "its a family issue". Would it have just been a "family issue" if it happened to the other side?
- 3 votes
I agree that it a private matter for the family to deal with the daughters pregnancy. However, when your mother is running for VP, unfortunately there's no privacy. Also, let's not forget about the big deal that everyone went on and on about Obama's pastor. Reverend Wright........................................ Didn't we hear that the boyfriend claims to be a redneck and proud of it............. we don't hear that.
- 1 vote
I heartily agree and to bring the boy to the convention and all the discussion by the party, the pundits, the parents, the bloggers, the news and the kids is over the top--please stop this ridiculous and stomach churning politics of destruction. I am not impressed with McCain and Palin- have handled this crisis. I know someone is going to say it isn't Palin and McCain--however, they are ultimately in charge of the press releases communications etc--and the continuation down this path is a demonstration of how they may handle a real crisis. Before someone paints me as a bleeding heart liberal--you would be very wrong. I am an unconvinced independent who unfortunately support the GOP in 2000, but not in 2004 and am really wondering what I should do now!
I am totally unimpressed with all the news coverage and the campaign's handling of this private matter.
All of you people are missing the big picture. Look at one of the big news stories a few years ago about the 17 year old black kid Genarlow Wilson, who had consensual sex with a 15 year old, and was charged with felony offenses and sentenced to 10 years in prison. He served two years behind bars before the The Monroe County Superior Court ordered him to be released.
However in White America a white male teen has consensual sex with another teen, knocking her up in the process, and ends up getting a first class ticket to the Republican National Convention.
How nice is that? o.0

The Alaska age of consent laws are unique. The age of consent in Alaska is 16. This is the age at which an individual may consent to have sex with someone over 18, legally, in Alaska. It applies both to heterosexual and homosexual acts.
The minimum age to marry in Alaska is 18. People under the age of 18 can marry with the consent of both parents. The prospective bride and groom should bring certified birth certificates, and their parents should present valid identification.

The age of consent in Georgia is 16 as specified by Section 16.6.3 of the Criminal Code of Georgia.
Also stated in the Criminal Code of Georgia 16.6.3 subsection (c), if a person is "at least 14 but less than 16 years of age and the person convicted of statutory rape is 18 years of age or younger and is no more than four years older than the victim, such person shall be guilty of a misdemeanor.

Ok so someone goes to Wasilla and finds out that Sarah's daughter is pregnant which at this point has been shared with McCain but not the media. Some idiot or idiots decide they are going to "out" or force her hand for public acknowledgment by casting rumors on the parenthood of her challenged baby. She then makes a statement due to the "smearing" and potential "smearing" of her persona (politics as usual all the way around - Democrat and Republican) and you ALL crucify her for making a statement indicating she brought this on herself and brought it public. Ignorance and lack of information does NOT justify what everyone here is doing to those poor kids. KNOCK IT OFF. They are 17 and 18 for heaven's sake. What kind of example are WE giving them by gossiping on a national level? As Hillary once said...'it takes a village (country) to raise a child" but not if some of the villagers (countrymen) are idiots! If anyone of you can say you live in a glass house....I'd say you better watch out for falling rock yourselves. Yes some of America is very sick and uninformed and its about time media lead the way to setting a more intelligent example for information that is relevant and actually matters instead of that which is personal, irrelevant and down right nasty. Her daughter has NOTHING and I repeat NOTHING to do with the campaign. And to those of you making the brainless comment that Gov. Palin will only provide a message "that its ok for teens to have sex and have babies"....I would say to you.....maybe you haven't been strong enough in YOUR family and YOUR messages to YOUR kids that you can be assured your children are smart enough to make their own decisions. Listen to what the teenagers are saying in response to all the adult hype. Ever been laughed at and lost your credibility with those you try to teach because of the hypocrisy that comes out of your mouths? Think about it. Listen for once and you might hear what your children are saying to you and just maybe you could use this as a common ground for a serious talk with your own children!
Oh, how cute. I hope this clean cut family can be an example to kids all over America. I hope Sara gets the power to insist that every family exercises only the choices that her daughters do.
God bless them all.

It's wrong when the media supposedly uses her daughter to spread their liberal agenda, but it's right when her own mom uses her to promote her conservative one? If she truly wanted this story to go away she would not have flown the boy into town, gotten him all shaved and dressed up, and touted him in front of the cameras. Trying to pass your daughter and her boyfriend off as a young engaged conservative couple in love kinda sickens me. She is a 17 year old pregnant unwed girl, dating a boy for about a year (including the time she has been pregnant) who is 18. If it's immoral & wrong for Hollywood to glamorize teen pregnancy then why is it ok if the republican nominee for vice-president w/ the base behind her does it?
- 1 vote
Oh how cute. I hope this clean cut family doesn't take to modifying its stand that counterceptive education should be excluded from sex education classes in schools because abstinence is all that is needed just because of a little personal experience. If they just love God enough then he'll give them the power to pass through life sinless. As long as Sara is at it, since she can use the power of the government to dictate what's taught in sex ed classes, then she might as well use the power of the same government to prevent people from using conterceptives altogether--I mean that's were we were back before the liberal Supreme Court enacted new law in Griswald v. Conn. saying the government couldn't ban counterceptives. We all know this nation started it slide about then--with no prayer in school and, God forbid, sex education taking its place.
The age of consent in Alaska is 16.
Since we are talking about decisions with implications for creation of life, shouldn't the consent statute be balanced with the rule that Palin would apply to abortion decisions too? Shouldn't the consent of the 16 year old to engage in potentially reproductive activity be tied to a legal requirement for prior parental notification 24 hours in advance.
Should not the young man have been required to notify the parent of his desire to potentially convert the child into a child bearing individual 24 hours in advance or face the same criminal penalties that Palin would impose on doctors?
Palin's press release self-congratulated the family for the daughter's decision to keep the child--congratulating themselves for the daughters choice: a choice that Palin would use the coercive power of the state to take away from everybody else.
The daughter's privacy should be acknowledge, but the issues presented by her unmarried, under aged pregnancy and her mother's advocacy of that her own theological precept be adopted as the law of the land---not to mention that his is an election to select the highest magistrate in the land, suggest some discussion of the issues involved is warranted.
Who denies that?
Isn't there some kind of law that was broke here? 18 is legal age, but I don't think that 17 is....interesting...also this...
- 1 vote
I am not a lawyer, but in many states a young girl can give legal consent at the age of 16.
Billy
Are you hoping that a law was broken?
This summer we celebrated my inlaws 60th wedding anniversary. They were 17 when they married and yes, she was pregnant. I am sure glad they married because I got #2 daughter and we have been married for 35 years and have produced two more GOP voters!
- 7 votes
didn't you break a law, by condeming yourself just now...because by your own words you will be judged and you will not escape your own conscience, until you yourself will repent before God...because the bible says "we all have gone astray..., for all have sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God". Instead of looking for pricks in someones eye look for the log in yours, with all respect. If you ever stood up to Hollywood and protested a sex infested movie, If you ever wrote to the editor of "seventeen" magazine and confronted them on writing sensual/sex tips articles...ONLY then can you say something that someone can respect and listen...but if your heart is not in it, let your words not be in it either.
Let them that are without sin cast the first stone.

Is all Ellen did was give the information as to how it is applied to Alaska after somebody asked, VAL666 weren't you the one talking about the 10 and 7 year old of Mr. Obama's during their appearance at the GOP convention? Oh yeah, you were. These are not children and they have already been paraded out there for political purposes. Did anyone get a load of LEVI"S my space comment on the Huffington Post? Everyother word was the F word and he stated he didn't want any children. Nice. I wouldn't let this guy marry my 17 year old daughter if she were having triplets.

Ellen for O'bama:
Don't know where you did your research (no reference of course) but it is not necessarily statutory rape in Alaska. If she was 16 and he was 18 at intercourse then it was sexual abuse of a minor (but not rape); however, if he was 17 then no. To spell it out it detail for the fact devoid Ellen, if he was 18 and she 17 (at their present ages) then it is not statutory rape.
For Ellen and the other research challenged, here's the Alskan law from
"The age of consent is defined as 16 years old, according to Alaska statutory rape laws. If a person who is at least 18 years old engages in sexual activity with a person who is 16 years old or younger, he or she will be charged with sexual abuse of a minor in the first degree. This charge is a felony in Alaska. And remember, it does not matter if you did not force or threaten the other person into performing this sexual act with you. It is still a crime under Alaska statutory rape laws."
Actuallly the law in Alaska is 16 and under.
Bringing the boy into the picture just opens up more debate so whatever happens its their fault.
Like the boys statement on his my space page He says he does not want children.
He described himself as a redneck. (Page has been taken down)
A lawyer was viewing the winkipedia page on Palin the night before the announcement and someone was editing the page taking down all the negative stuff an putting up nicey nice things that only a family member could or should know. The lawyer reedited the page. The login for the person who was first editing it says retired.
Alaska has the Romeo Law, like we do in Florida. If Levi was 18, and Bristol was 16 or 17, it would not be illegal.
The Romeo Law says as long as the younger party is of the age of consent (16) and the older party is less than 3 years older than the younger, then it's not an issue.
He would have to be a full three years older than her for it to be considered 3rd Degree Child Abuse.
Even if the girl is not of the age of consent (and I don't know the age in Alaska), a lot of states have so called "Romeo and Juliet" laws which make it okay if the kids are within a couple years of each other in age - which may be why MSNBC originally claimed the kid was 26. No Republican scandal that can't be hyped by (in)judicious journalism.
That said, I think it's a great object lesson for kids - their actions (like getting knocked up) affect more people than just themselves. So, you did it, kids, your parents are taking the heat for it, might as well come out of the shadows. Old enough to make babies, old enough to deal with the fall-out...
AND, if you're running for public office, might wanna take down your kid's MySpace page with the nude pics, lewd insinuations and filthy language on it. Just a suggestion.
- 1 vote
She just turned 17 so at intercourse time she was 16. You can still read most of the MySpace page on the Huffington Post.
They're both high school kids. They are supposed to be entering their Senior year. We know Bristol's not going to school any more, apparently she dropped out of school last year, but what about Levi? Does he also plan to drop out of school since he'll be married with a baby???
- 1 vote
Why is this an issue? Is Sarah Palin running for office or sainthood? What's wrong, got nothing else?
Have to be three years older and in a position of authority in Alaska. He's 18 and her boyfriend. No crime.
Yeah...thats gonna make all of the difference in the world. The RNC should definitely glorify the fact that two teenage children are going to become parents.

These people have something you obviousely dont guts. What do you want them to do tell the world how ashamed they are then crawl in a hole. Would that make you feel better, perhaps sleep a little better tonight, would you feel like you made a difference with your pathetic liitle life.

What is it with you people? Can you not see the problem here? Crawl into a hole? No, of course not but step aside. Obviously Palin should realize her little girl is going to need her even more with a baby on the way. Why in God's name would any mother parade her child on national tv crying they want privacy and then accepting the vp spot? I am so tired of you people defending this action. If this were dems in this situation, your tongues would not stop wagging. Too bad it happened. If McCain has a chance in hell, he should ask this woman to step down and select a suitable running mate.

You sure can feel the hate wave! There would have been a love wave had Mrs. Palin aborted her Downs son and have had her daughter abort her first grandchild.
Plus, why cannot her husband take responsilbity of the kids and home while she works...I have a neice who is a doctor and her husband stays home with the kids. I am sure the Palins have household help. Both my husband and I worked and had 5 children and it was really hard because of the lack of hoursehold help for tasks required to keep things running for 7 busy people.
When I stayed home for the 1st 16 years after my first child was born; feminists gave me a hard time Now the liberal feminists are screaming she should stay home...makes no sense to me. I guess the right -lust-desire to kill unborn babies takes precedence over any common sense.
- 2 votes
Alaska and Washington D.C. are 7,000 miles apart. What does Palin plan to do, take the train home every night like Biden?? Drag all of these children to D.C. with her?? She wouldn't even give birth in the lower 48, so I doubt that's going to happen. Has anyone mentioned to the husband that he's the one that's expected to give up his life so his wife can pursue her political career.
What really makes me sick is all of the woman acting like it's wonderful that this woman is abandoning her children for political gain. A woman's duty is to her children. If a man says that they're called sexist, but I'm a woman and I'll say it because it's true. If a woman doesn't want to raise her children she has no business having children.
There is a striking difference in "family values" between the Obama/Biden ticket and the McCain/Palin ticket. I prefer the ticket that puts their children before their own self interest.
McCain has 7 children, but we only see the one blond girl. Why is that???
- 3 votes
Well, Our gvernment in its wisdom furnish's the VP with quite a nice , large house in Washington, D.C. Men are taking care of children while their wives work and in the cases I know the wives make more than their husbands because of early career choices and the children are healthy and happy.
I would not worry about the lesson (?) that these two young people will give when we have the Hollywood crowd to keep our children educated about sex. The latest was the 16 year old Spears sister. She enjoyed the public eye and if you feel that these two need their privacy why do you not shut up and let them have it!
You should try reading the real truth about John and Cindy McCain. She has done more to help people than Hillary ever thought of because she is basically a very selfish woman.
Cindy not only oversees a business but finds time to do charity, work on land mines etc.
No matter what I or anyone else qill write, you all will keep on with your selfish, mean, nasty and down right dirty, crude, coarse remarks and then have the nerve to say that the Republicans are worse. Shame on you. America needs good men and women to work for this country. Try it, you might like it.

The dad was apparently staying home with the kids when this happened. So why didn't the kids have bodyguards when they went place, after all they are the governor's kids?
Are you nuts! Have you ever been to Alaska? Bodyguards! Yikes! You are extremely ignorant of these peoples lives.
- 1 vote
Again the ignorance of Conservatives surfaces. Note the word "choice". Take a course in debate and learn basic logic. To be pro-choice does not mean we force our views on others, we merely want them to remain free to choose, you know, free will, choice, in other words, mind your own business.
Apparently after stating leave the kids alone, McCain and Palin are going to put them in the spotlight. As if outing your child nationally isn't traumatic enough, we are going to make them poster children. What are they thinking???

I don't know why the liberal media is making such a big deal over this matter. As far as I can tell, having the baby prior to marriage is now the norm. All the liberals in Hollywood do it and it is ok. So the liberal press and all their small minded followers need to back off. We are not electing the daughter,
remember?
- 8 votes
I agree with you except for the fact that very conservative republicans (like Palin) preach a different message. She says abstinence is the way to go in out schools but evidently it does not work even for her own family. So if this is the "norm" the I think republican's should stop being hypocrites and preach a correct message to our kids about safe sex and contraception.
- 12 votes
But we are electing someone who welcomes into thier family a person who describes himself as a redneck F***er.
That should bring the country together and help with the whole unity thing.
I voted for Reagan twice am I one of your hated liberals.
I am shure you spoke up when the right called Chelsea ugly when she was groing up, something she had no choice in.
I am shure you will find that Palins daughter had some choice in what she was doing.
But you are right we should back off the children, I just dont think that the moral majority has a perfect record here.
Memories get short. But wrong is wrong.

He's 18 and she's 17. He's an adult, and she's a minor. That's rape. He should go to jail.
- 1 vote
In some states it would be rape; but in Alaska there would have to be a 3 year difference in age before it is called rape. Right or not the kids need to be left alone. She made a mistake by not getting married first but she is keeping the baby more than some teens do. It just prove even the president or vice president's family are human to and their families make mistakes too.

MAYBE YOU SHOULD CHECK YOUR STATES AGE OF CONSENT LAWS. I SUPPOSE YOU WERE NEVER THAT AGE AND HAD RAGING HORMONES. LEAVE THOSE KIDS ALONE THEY ARE NO DIFFERENT THAN ANY OTHER TEENAGER. WE AT LEAST HAVE A NORMAL EVERYDAY PERSON RUNNING FOR OFFICE. SHE IS IN TOUCH WITH THE NORMAL WORKING FAMILY AND SHE HAS ONE. I APPLAUD MRS. PALIN
- 6 votes
Generally the age of consent is 16, so if both parties are over 16 than statutory rape has not been committed. The age of consent is determined by the state and this is what Alaskan law says on the topic- being 16 years of age or older, the offender engages in sexual penetration with a person who is under 13 years of age or aids, induces, causes, or encourages a person who is under 13 years of age to engage in sexual penetration with another person;

ROGER D, IT HAS NOW BECOME A SAD SAD TIME IN OUR SOCIETY WHEN WE EXCEPT THIS AS THE "NORM" SHAME ON YOU FOR EXCEPTING THIS AND APPLAUDING THE ACTS OF 2 F*^%#$ UP KIDS.
Wrong BillyTwit:
"The age of consent is defined as 16 years old, according to Alaska statutory rape laws. If a person who is at least 18 years old engages in sexual activity with a person who is 16 years old or younger, he or she will be charged with sexual abuse of a minor in the first degree. This charge is a felony in Alaska. And remember, it does not matter if you did not force or threaten the other person into performing this sexual act with you. It is still a crime under Alaska statutory rape laws."
plans to marry at 17 and 18...BEFORE they knew she was pregnant...yeah right.
- 10 votes
Apparently, cara, you have never dealt with teens. They talk marriage at 12 and 13... They're totally braindead at that age so don't be too quick to dismiss their absurdities as "unbelievable". There is nothing too bizarre for a teen to do or think. We should lock them in cages until they can prove they are not crazy.

We should lock them in cages until they can prove they are not crazy.
I think this should also apply to a lot of other "sane" people in our society, regardless of age.

OLDEFARTE...
Thanks, oldefarte, for a great laugh!!! :) People, you all need to lighten up. Handle the problems that arise in your own families...if you're doing a good job, it will probably keep you too busy to worry about criticizing someone elses. And every parent knows that your kids are not necessarily going to follow everything you have tried to teach them...doesn't necessarily mean you aren't teaching the correct information...just maybe that they aren't listening.
Can this get any more crazy? Why don't they just release video of the sex between these two? Oh wait, it was an immaculate conception!
- 3 votes
They should just leave the kids out of this. To make them appear at the convention together just to save face is pretty bad. The best thing that this Gov Palin lady could do is to let Bristol stay at home away from the convention. People understand that the girl has other things to deal with right now. The republicans don't need to fly the boyfriend out to the convention so that the media can see that the two teens are together. Everybody knows that is all this is about with the boyfried all of a sudden showing up to join the family. These kids probably feel like circus animals right about now. Leave them alone! Focus on Gov Palins own misdeeds! Kids are expected to make mistakes. At least her daughter is owning up to hers.
- 10 votes
I agree but she decided to get the boy down here. Done right she should have told the story Invited the kid and not try to disguise the fact by using the baby as a shield. Tells you about this womans thought processes.
This whole mess is sick, sick, sick. Palin is supposed to be above this, now she has a daughter that ignored mom and is pregnant. If mom can't handle her own family, how the he** is she going to handle the country?

If it isn't one, big, happy (if somewhat illegitimate) family!

McCain didn't nominate the Mormon family (Romney), after all.
And how come Dem hacks tout candidates who have been drug abusers and rapists and they give them a pass and then later shake their fingers at Palin's husband for a 22 year old DUI!?!? Clearly it is a mistake to fall into their way of 'thinking' which in normal circles is called 'pure partisanship'.

I would not say Obama was given a "pass" when he made his revalation. It was a front page story for quite a while.

You people are sick-o's just like Palin. It's the fact that Mrs. Palin thinks she is "better" than everyone else, that rankles most of us. She preaches values and condemns the rest of us for our beliefs. Somebody said the other night, "Don't throw stones, if you live in glass houses." I guess we are really seeing what that means, now. Talk about a worst choice. However, maybe McCain just did it to take the spotlight away from his confused, disoriented, demented self. Just a thought.
Whitebird
1. You allege that Palin thinks she is "better" than everyone else. Obviously, that is your opinion because there is no way to know precisely what anyone else things. That being said, give us an example of why you say that.
2. Please provide an example of when you felt "condemned" by Sarah Palin.

Is it true that he describes himself as a redneck F***er and is still welcomed into the Palin family??????
- 7 votes
Not only that but it proclaimed he was not ready to be a dad. i have seeded a link on the article you can read.
- 4 votes
That is an easy one:
The person who should care is the teenager who he is going to marry, and the family should wonder what kind of values that they taught their kid who would go out with this kind of person in the first place.
I guess Ms. Palin would have a problem if he wasn't a redneck.

tim-475742 wrote: "Is it true that he describes himself as a redneck F***er and is still welcomed into the Palin family??????"
Actually Palin is probably proud of the fact that he calls himself a Redneck. In 2005 Palin started a marketing business named 'Rouge Cou' which literally means 'Redneck' in French. This is no bullshizz... it is honest to God truth. Just Google: Rouge Cou Palin
Leave them alone! There are plenty of other teenagers that are in the same situation!
I wish them all the best!
- 9 votes
Who do you want to leave them alone? Us or the GOP? I'm not the one putting them in the national spotlight. If the Republicans want people to stop talking about these kids, then they should be at home in Alaska where they belong. Didn't school start today?
- 9 votes
then they should be at home in Alaska where they belong. Didn't school start today?
I have no problem if the family wants to be with her at such an important convention. It is not like previous Pres/VP candidates haven't had their kids their.
Just because the kids are there does not force the media to put them in the spotlight.
- 1 vote
Don't be ridiculous. The Palins are the ones who have put these kids in the spotlight. Her ambition clearly over rules her parenting skills. This says a lot about what kind of person she is, and it says a lot about McCain's judgement. I cannot imagine being 17 and having the entire world knowing that I was pregnant out of wedlock. Of course in redneck circles, perhaps this is OK, but most of the civilized world is cringing with sympathy for these kids.
- 3 votes
You are right oldguru. Palin is the mother that put her daughter in the spotlight. She has humiliated her daughter and denied her the right to her privacy. I don't think I could have brought all this humiliation on my own daughter. I would have had to bow out rather than subject my child to such abuse.

Time for a reality check. The Daily KOS with their LIES and the LIBs on this forum that spread the LIES are responsible for this girls story being front page. With no constructed LIE by KOS, there would be no need to discuss this at all.
Now that the LIE has been exposed, where are the apologies and the remorse?????

Rational Poster...You have hit the nail on the head. Except please try to stay away from
the labels...most thinking people from any political party or political leanings can clearly
see the reality of how this situation has evolved..."LIBs" included. Lying is not exclusionary
to any certain group, as we have all so painfully seen.
McCain/Palin just keeps gettin' better and better and funnier and funnier, doesn't it? It's like watching a really bad movie. You can't make this sh*t up! What a train wreck.
I guess thats what happens when you vote against sex ed in schools and try to teach abstinance only

This is newsworthy? Who cares if the boyfriend is going to show up to the RNC. This is sounding like a soap opera the more it is reported.
This is just weird. Seriously, what is the governor thinking dragging another kid into the spot light. Again, very strange and uncomfortable.

Are you kidding? If I was that boy and got along OK with the girl's parents, I would be at the convention. This is historic and I'd want to be a part of it.
Can you remember being 18?
Okay. Let's not make an issue of this, Republicans. Get real. If you don't want it to be a big story, don't make it one. Bringing the soon to be son-in-law to the convention just keeps the story going. I feel so sorry for these two kids. It's going to be tough enough being parents, even just being married, when you're just kids yourself. I cannot believe that McCain and Palin are using her daughter in such a way. It makes me sick!!!
I have to wonder if this is just a way to keep McCain from having to discuss real issues. He was all about attacking Obama so he didn't have to explain his 95% agreement with Bush. Now he's using these poor kids to deflect the attention. What a loser.
- 18 votes
I have to agree with you .... This is just a way to avoid the real issue at hand. Things like this happen everyday in every household no matter how we preach and teach to our youth about the dangers and responsibilities. Question in my mind is if they marry how long will it last? FORGET THE KIDS AND GET WITH THE ISSUES AT HAND !!!!!! PERSONALLY I DON'T THINK SHE HAS ENOUGH EXPERIENCE TO RUN OUR COUNTRY...... JUST MY THOUGHTS!
- 3 votes
I agree, too, just thinking. I think he is just throwing her under the bus, just as she is throwing her daughter under the bus. Great team, don't you think?
Looks to me like it is the Palin Family and the RNC are the ones who are making such a big deal over this matter. If the situation were normal for them the young man would have been at his fiance's side from the get go. Your norm is vastly different from mine.

I dont care which side makes an issue out of it....we..the people of newsvine should move on. Gov palin's daughter being pregnant will not sway my vote one way or the other...and it shouldn't.

Pathetic Mother and VP Candidate who had her pregnant daughter conveniently holding her little brother with a big blanket over her midsecction during the VP announcement. Palin has manipulated this pregancy the entire way and this is just more of it. If the kids are supposed to be off limits in the campaign why drag the boyfriend from Alaska to the convention? The only reason he needs to make an appearance is to legitimize their "marriage". Fat chance that ever happens. She's proving herself a worthy succesor to the deception, dishonesty, and manipulation that has been the hallmark of the Bush/Cheney regime.

Yes, and we don't claim to be something we are not, like the Repugs do, logdump.
Again, another forum of amazing idiots and ignorance! "Gotta love American institutionalization and its mentally dysfunctional think tank proclivity!" Everyone should just stop the school yard insults on both sides. It is showing the bully, ya ya, I am better than you, but don't look in my closet ideology.
How about let's just amaze at the fact that we are seeing people run for office that are not "perfect," who show promise in many areas, yet show stupidity in choices like many Americans do. One chose to do drugs and no telling what else, and the other raises a family in a society of too much, too fast, and has a 17-yo who gets pregnant. These symbols are America today from all sides. We should all be thankful that not just the ultra elite, who actually dawn more issues than regular Joe's and Jane's, are not vetting for the presidency. Look at all the problematic family degrading and insulting legal issues the Kennedy's have gone through. Walking away from murder, rape, drugs, mentally ill children, alcohol and yet they are all vetted and voted into public office or non-profits. The Reagan's had drugs, alcohol, children out of control problems and Carter much of the same with family being on the dysfunctional end of things. And yes, the Bush's too have issues. And, the list goes on!
Personally, I prefer not to have the Obama train and the entourage that follows in office as I am a middle-class working single Mom who does not wish to have her taxes jacked up and more social programs on top of the ones which do not work due to total lack of accountability. I am tired of paying for laziness and generational welfare, which sucks on this countries debt more than any war (granted I am not for war either), however these are my views. Thank the constitution for allowing all of us the opportunity to speak our minds and aggregate ignorance and stupidity, racism and biases, bulling and fear, rhetoric and passivity, and dysfunction with able thought process proclaiming difference and indifference.
I'm not totally happy with the choices we have on both sides, but this is what the 11th hour has to offer.
Obama-Biden (one who opts for the profound use of the "change" quotient and nothing substantial in the rhetoric that quantifies what directly "change" will affect other than more social programs and taxing those who already pay the most taxes (me)). One, who holds closeness with some very questionable characters, has never held a private job, and only worked for non-profit ie social organizations, with no military understanding or experience, and no business background or management. A candidate who vetted a running mate that has been in the system promoting same-old-same-old with the tag-a-long beltway, good ole' boy insider image, who plagiarized his way into many opportunities and congeals with status quo economics and is not one for change, but who has managed to be with the money makers and shakers, lobbyists, etc.; this shows no choice of change or reform.
What happened to the Democratic Party of the 60s that made sense in many aspects for change, not to undermine education by subjecting the systems to lower standards for everyone to pass, subject the real taxpayer to more social programs making people weak and lazy, and looking forward to prosperous venues, not wasted spending and ideology that promotes socialism?
Granted it is wonderful that America has come around to having those of various races and colors join in as part of the "American Dream."
Then you have the McCain-Palin, an old sour maverick, and a young mother of 5 who is dealing with everyday issues like much of America. McCain has been a veteran, a leader, worked on both sides of the aisle, has had issues, married twice as many Americans have, a brood of children and adopted too, POW, believes in reform, and not the status quo, has served his country quite honorably, yet does bring forth many questions as far as age (can he survive the presidency mentally intact and health wise), and ability to move away from politics as usual, which for the greater part of his tenure he has been one to not go with the status quo.
We do not need more taxes; we need accountability and reform in all aspects of government and private business that chose to undermine the general American way and law. We need leaders who can think on their feet, and make mistakes, fix them, and move on without all the finger pointing and judgmental crescendos of name calling, we need America first and the world second, we need incentives for private business to hire and expand the ideology of financial stability at all levels of employment. We need independence from oil and fast paced movement into the renewable energy sector even if we make mistakes on system selections keep trying until we find the solution, solar, wind, hydro, carbon based fuels reaching into the future for limitation on emissions. We need reform in education making it mandatory and raising the bar back to pass or sit until you do pass. We need welfare reform stop allowing generational welfare to exist, accountability, make it mandatory to have a job to collect it, mandatory drug testing and help to get off of what ails you before allowing tax dollars to give you more fuel to buy drugs or alcohol, mandatory education for those in the system, justifiable requirements before justifying the check being cut. I could go on!
I just know that America is in a very challenged state of mind at this point, and having the white house under the control of a socialism system of change is not what America was built upon, nor does it serve any purpose but make people lazy and tied to a system that promotes a new style of oppression.
Nonetheless many will jerk this posting around, but that's their American right to voice your opinion and make your choice at the voting booth come November, but remember just because the people vote does not mean the Electoral College will grant that popular vote. America isn't freedom wonderful. Ha!

Ditto akguy's approval. Nice job. Just to add my opinion on becoming oil independent, this will take a considerable amount of time to transact. Just take a look around the room your presently in and "see the oil" (everything that required oil as a source): plastics, manufacturing processes to make things, transportation, etc...the infrastructure is significantly tied to oil. It will take considerable time to become oil independent and I doubt if Obama's projection will be accurate. In the interrim, I do believe it is necessary to further tap America's resources to reduce dependency on foreigners.
Also finger pointing and name calling are probably prerquisites for these bloggers.
And FYI: I tried solar panels to heat my water...it did not do a very good job (little hot water). My family has a big white windmill on one of our farms that drives me crazy and is a eyesore that I wish we hadn't succombed to government subsidizing.

Scorp,
You really need to do your homework. You sit here and lecture people but yet you yourself don't bother to give facts. Instead you make broad stroke very subjective comments and think at the end of the day they have value for all who read. Does your family make over $250K per year? If so, then your taxes will go up, if not they won't. As for not knowing what "change" means, that means you haven't been listening -- what topics are you confused about? Health Care, Iraq, Taxes, Energy, Gun Control, Abortion, Schools, Social Security, etc. All of these issues have been talked about over and over again. Tell me why Obama is a socialist? Give some examples. Health Care, yeah, 47 million people with out health care is not a problem and it doesn't cost me a dime, right? Raising the taxes of people who make more than $250K from 35% to 39.5%. Really, does this make him a socialist?
Finally, if you can't prove something, why say it? I have a "gut" feeling that Obama is shady; I can't prove it but I have a gut feeling nonetheless? Specifically why don't you tell us how close OBAMA is to Ayers. This should be fascinating. Look I don't mind a good debate about the issues, but far too many people are more intent on making remarks that they cannot back up in a feeble effort to make their case. I agree with you we should all play nice, but it's hard for me as an Independent, to ignore comments such as yours when you lase them with statements questioning Obama's character but you say very little about the other guys character. Read your comment again, did you talk about the Keating 5? Why did Mrs. Palin mislead us about the Bridge to no where? What about McCain's joke on rape? Why didn't McCain vote for the MLK holiday? And on, and on and on. If people can stay to the issues and leave out the character assassinations, then I think the chances of a civil type debate is possible.

Maybe you are saying what you know and trying to be factual but you are not telling the whole story.
50% of the jobs in this country come from Small Business and Obama wants to eliminate capital gains taxes for small business. While many small business people do not earn over $250000 per year, their taxes WILL go up if this cap gains for small business is eliminated.
John McCain would push to make the Bush tax cuts permanent while Obama will let them go back up - for EVERYONE.
Finally, what do YOU say is fair? The top 5% had 36% of AGI but paid 60% of taxes in 2006. How much is enough? The bottom 50% of tax returns paid an average of $447 per return. How little is enough?
AKGUY Johnson is right about Scorpioncreed Johnson being right! There you have it! Authentic frontier jibberish.

On the subject of taxes. Neither canidate can say they won't raise taxes. If they do they are lying like all politicians. At this point we are in very deep debt to several countries and the hole is only getting bigger every day. Point your finger at the war, company bail-outs, or miss management the reality is still the same. That money will have to come from somewhere, and that somewhere is the pockets of the American people who put all this miss-spending idiots in office. Our economic problems are the fault of both parties, we are feeling the impact of a corner we have been painting ourselves into for about 50 years. There are a long list of contributing factors that will all have be addressed. So if anyone says 'no new taxes' on either side, they are lying to you. No politican can make that promise for the next 4-8 years (if they win re-election).

Sepulchre, This colum is not about Taxes. It's about good old american teen sex. Can we get back to it.. I was wondering i didnt see any reports of video of the teens rapped it a sweety mess of frothy lust... Any one see anything on utube yet ????
billytw, the age of consent is often something under 18 although I don't know what it is in Alaska. I would guess that 17 is probably old enough. Sometimes it can be statutory rape if one party is a lot older than the other but that's not the case here. I agree with dawnbc1. These kids shouldn't be paraded in front of the media.
BTW beccalen2, I'm very liberal but I certainly don't think it's ok for a 17 year old to have a baby. Guess momma's abstinence only agenda didn't work to well.
Leave it to the Looney Left (MSN & NBC) to go off on a tangent about a matter like this. MSN again shines with it's myopic view of the world's important issues.

Strange but I have been looking for something onMcCain's stand on the issues but then I remember he shut up about them when he started his attack ads
Can the repubs get any lower? Bringing the two kids out in public. If having kids before marriage is the norm, how come the Christian right doesn't support it (except, I guess, in this case)? How come gov palin is anti birth control and pro abstinence only and she trots out her daughter who is apparently neither. Some family values crowd. Because she said the magic words-keeping the baby- is the only reason the zealots aren't painting her with the scarlet A. All the liberals in Hollywood are not doing it, at least if so, they are of legal age. I think this is going to backfire on mccain bigtime.
